Jim Gallien- Jim picked up Chris while he was hitchkiking in Alaska on his way to Stampede Trail. Althought Jim told Chris it was very dangerous of him to go into the wilderness without being fully prepared, Chris didn't change his mind. He also offered Chris some food his wife had made for him and offered him a pair of boots after telling Chris his wouldn't keep his feet warm and dry. Jim also gave him insight on how there isn't much game back there and that even he would find an animal, his small caliber rifle most likely wouldn't kill it.
Wayne Westerberg- Wayne picks Chris up after he ran from his family, gave him a job and even rented out a room for him. Regardless the job that Wayne gave Chris, he did it without thinking twice about it, and did it much harder than any person he ever had, even if the job was as bad as cleaning dead rats out of a hole or mucking rotten grain. Upon first meeting Chris, Wayne described the look in his eye to be dark and emotive and suggested a trace of Greek or Chippewa in them, giving insight on how Chris feels he is held down by the government. Also, Wayne could tell that Chris was very intelligent by the use of big words and when Chris would tell him about how he tries to understand why people are so cruel to one another, but Wayne would just tell him it was a mistake to try to understand. Eventually Chris will leave and Wayne will be arrested for selling illegal T.V. boxes. As a result, Wayne could be considered a father figure for Chris.
Jan Burres- Jan also picks Chris up while he was hitchhiking and helps take care of him for the time being. Jan also tries to convince Chris to go back to his family, but was unsucsessful. Jan had a son that was about the same age as Chris. He lived a similar life to Chirs which is why Jan acts and feels like a mother figure toward Chris.
